Party hard, Feste hardt

Party hardy • Feste hardt

Yesterday evening, the 10th of November,  a school party was held for the students from the Van Maerlantlyceum and their exchange students. It took place in the Oude Rechtbank at Stratum. The party began at 8 PM and ended at 12 AM. As always, at the beginning of the party everybody had to loosen up a bit, but after a while everyone was having a blast. There was a disk jockey who played the music, which was very nice. Everyone was dancing and having a good time.

There were various different places for the students to be at the party. You could dance inside, in front of the DJ and there also was a courtyard you could sit and chat. This variety of places was nice because you could sit outside and relax if you didn’t feel like dancing. Twice that evening, the music had fallen out. It didn’t stop the dancing, though. Everybody kept the party going themselves.  The second time the music had fallen out, everybody had to move to the club next door, where the sound was perfectly working. Most of the exchange students had a really good time. They actually were the first ones who started dancing. The atmosphere was really great. Overall, the party was a big success.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam, the capital city of the Netherlands. For many years it is host to tourists from all over the world. The city also has many museums, and is home to several cultural highlights, such as the Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and the Anne Frank House. Amsterdam also has a lot of shopping streets, there are the Kalverstraat, Leidsestraat and the P.C. Hoofdstraat. These are the big streets, which almost everybody knows about. But Amsterdam has a lot more to offer, it has many small streets where, if you don’t look out, you can lose yourself completely. The city is beautiful, this because it’s a mix of modern and classical architecture. There are these big canal buildings which descend from the 17th century.

Amsterdam is known by very many people as the red light district. Most people have heard of this area. The area is one of the oldest parts of Amsterdam. The red light district also is one of the most visited highlights in the country. For the people who don’t know what the red light district is, I will give an short explanation: this is the place where people come to go to the prostitutes, sex shops and coffee shops. But the red light district is one of the most beautiful places in Amsterdam, the 14th century architecture makes it stand out. It is definitely worth a visit.

If you pay a visit to Amsterdam, there are a few places you have to see:

The Madame Tussauds, this is a museum where famous people are made into waxen figures.

The Amsterdam dungeon: this is a place for terror and excitement, if you aren’t afraid of anything, this is the place for you. It’s a haunted house where actors give shows about the history of Amsterdam. Every show is different, because you are part of the experience. It’s not only scary, it’s also funny.

Het Vondelpark is one of the most beautiful parks in the Netherlands, this place is peace and quiet. It’s a place of serenity between the busy streets of Amsterdam.

Rijksmuseum

The ‘Rijksmuseum’ is a museum dedicated to arts and history. The museum is located at the Museum Square in Amsterdam. It is near the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum and the Concertgebouw. The Rijksmuseum was originally established in The Hague also known as ‘Den Haag’. In 1808 the Rijksmuseum moved to Amsterdam. The current building is designed by Pierre Cuypers. He combinated Gothic and Renaissance elements in a style that is called ‘Neogothic’.  The building contains over 200 rooms and the rooms are full of art and history pieces. The collection paintings were made between the 15th and 19th century.

Most of them are paintings from Dutch painters. A few come from Italian artists. Not only paintings are shown in the Rijksmuseum also furniture, jewerly, sculptures and so go on! There are over 500 pieces of art in the museum. The museum has various highlights which are shown in a special room. This is one of the biggest rooms in the whole museum. At the end of the room is stading the most populair painting of the Rijksmuseum, it is ‘De Nachtwacht’ made by Rembrandt van Rijn. The painting was made for the ‘kloveniersdoelen’. ‘kloveniersdoelen’ are association buildings of the civic guard in Amsterdam. Rembrandt made a group painting of them. The frequently asked question is who the girl in the back is. The aswer on that question is that she’s the mascot is of the civic guard. In short the Rijksmuseum is a museum where you can see history and art pieces in a beautiful environment.

Trip to Amsterdam

This morning the Norwegians and the Dutchmen had to wake up early, because it was time to go to Amsterdam! Everyone was ready for the bus to leave at 7.45 am. After a 1.5 hour trip, the students arrived in Amsterdam. The students were excited to go sightseeing.

From 10.15h - 12.30h, the students went on a guided tour, followed by two hours of spending free time in Amsterdam. Some students went shopping in Amsterdam's famous shopping streets, others decided to have a drink at a cafe.

The group went to the Rijksmuseum, the most well known museum in the Netherlands. After 1.5 hours at the Rijksmuseum, it was time for the group to go back to Eindhoven. But the way back lasted longer than expected. The bus was part of the second biggest congestion in the Netherlands this year.

We asked Sol, who stays with Lieven, about the way she experienced the day:

When you were on the bus heading to Amsterdam, what were your thoughts?

- I was very excited to see Amsterdam and do all the sightseeing. For example the bridges, the red light district, the shopping streets and 'de dam'.

Was the visit to the Rijksmuseum like your expectations?

- I enjoyed the visit to the Rijksmuseum. It was different from what I expected, but in a good way. I didn't expect there to be an explanation about every single painting or art piece.

Where have you been when you had free time in Amsterdam?

- I've done a lot of things in my free time. After having been to the red light district and having taken pictures of bridges and the canals I went to a cafe to have a drink. I've also visited some small streets where you can shop or get something to eat.

When the group arrived in the evening at the Van Maerlantlyceum, a big amount of the students went to Lieven's, where Sol stayed for the week, to have dinner. After eating soup and ordering french fries for thirty persons and a nice evening with music, the students went to the house they stayed for the week at 00.30 pm. The students that didn't went to Lieven's, had a dinner in Eindhoven.

GLOW

GLOW 11-10-14

Yesterday’s glow was amazing. There was a big light show projected on the church. Throughout the rest of the city there was a lot of other art work made with light. On ‘de markt’ big cubes were stacked on eachother and all sorts of different lights shined out of the cubes, it looked really pretty! In little cafe’s around ‘de markt’ bottled water was served and in the bottom of the of the bottles lights were placed. This made the bottles look really cool.

Trijntje Oosterhuis

Trijntje Oosterhuis is ready for next year’s songfestival

Trijntje Oosterhuis has confirmed that she is taking part in next year’s Songfestival on radio program Gouden Uren, hosted by Daniël Dekker on NPO radio 2. She is going to represent the Netherlands next year. Trijntje: “I’m really excited. It’s gonna be so much fun.” Trijntje wasn’t always a big fan of the Songfestival, but her opinion on it has changed since Anouk (Dutch singer) performed there. Trijntje: “Anouk put the Songfestival in another light for me, and she’s put the festival on the map. It really is an honour to go there and represent our country. Ilse and Waylon (also Dutch singers) have cooperated on it last year as well.” Anouk is writing the song, yet it isn’t finished. Trijntje is very excited about the song and it gives her a sense of bravery. “This song is the main reason that I’m taking part in the festival.”

The Songfestival is going to be held next year in Wenen. The semifinals will be on the 19th and 21st of May 2015, the finals will be on the 23th of May.

Sport

In the Netherlands we play a lot of different sports, like tennis and hockey. But by far is soccer the most popular sport in the Netherlands and everyone knows at least something about soccer. There is a TV show called 'Studio Sport' that aires every Sunday at 19pm. In 'Studio Sport' you can see all the highlights of soccer games. You can also see the highlights of other sport but only when there is a major competition, like the World Cup or the Olympics.

There are a lot of soccer fans and almost all of them have their own favorite club. Sometimes there are fights between fans. The most fights are between Feyenoord fans and Ajax fans, because they’re rivals. We also got a lot of fans for our national team. In 2010 at the World Cup in South-Africa the Netherlands was the most supported team

Here in Eindhoven resides the current number 1 team of the country : PSV what stands for 'Philips Sport Vereniging' and translates to philips sport club. They have their own stadium : the 'Philips Stadion'

This is the intermediate position of the Dutch league.

How to make ‘pannenkoeken’

‘Pannenkoeken’ are thinner than the American pancakes but thicker than the French crêpes. The taste is somewhat similar, but not quite the same. They are very easy to make and you can put whatever you want on them. From cheese to cherries, almost everything tastes good on them. The basic recipe for these ‘pannenkoeken’.

Ingredients (for 10x):

-250 gr flour

-2 eggs

-500 ml milk

-some butter to bake them in

-a pinch of salt

Preparation:

-Sift the flour and a pinch of salt into a large bowl and make a little pit in the center.

-Put both of the eggs (all of them, except the shell of course) in that little pit.

-Start whisking the batter with care, you don’t want lumps in it.

-Pour the milk slowly into the batter but keep stirring! Continue this until you poured all the milk and the batter is smooth and all the flour is used up.

-Pour some of the batter in a frying pan (be sure to have it greased with some butter)

-Bake the ‘pannenkoek’ until the underside is light-brown, then flip it over and bake the other side light-brown

Frikandellen

Let me introduce a famous Dutch snack: the ‘frikandel’.
It’s a long, skinless, dark-coloured, deep-fried meat sausage. The frikandel was created by Gerrit de Vries in 1954. He made meatballs but had to change the recipe. His solution was making a sausage instead of a ball.
The frikandel is the most famous snack in The Netherlands. Dutchmen eat on average 37 ‘frikandellen’ a year.
There are many ways to eat a frikandel, for instance on bread or with fries. There is also the ‘frikandel speciaal’ (the special frikandel). The frikandel is cut almost in half and filled with mayonnaise, curry ketchup and chopped raw onions.
Sjonnie Noordeinde has the world record for eating frikandellen. He ate 47 frikandellen in only one hour. So I recommend to visit a local snackbar if you’re in The Netherlands and order a delicious and famous frikandel!

Music

5 Seconds of Summer

5  Seconds of Summer recently released their self-titled album.  This is one of the reasons they’ve become famous. Since they’re really close friends with the members of One Direction, their way to the red carpet has begun. 5 Seconds of Summer was the support act on the world tour of One Direction, which also caused that they became quite popular.

Luke Hemmings, one of the members of 5 seconds of Summer, was the one who started the band. He was the first of the boys to upload covers of bands like Green Day. His friends Calum Hood and Michael Clifford became a part of his youtube channel and it didn’t last long before they could call themselves a band. Their cover of Next To You by Chris Brown was watched more than 60.000 times. November 11th 2011 Ashton Irwin joined their group as drummer. A lot of producers became interested in their music and they signed a contract with Sony ATV Music Publishing. Their first EP called Unplugged became number 3 in the iTunes chart in Australia. One Direction posted a link to their video twice on their twitter or facebook, which made those video’s famous, and the band itself too.

They have released five EP’s and one album in two years time.  Six of their songs are released as singles and are very popular. Especially the song ‘She Looks So Perfect’: on 5 February 2014, the song was made available for pre-order on iTunes. Within two days, it had reached the number one on iTunes in 39 countries, including Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Ireland.

‘She Looks So Perfect’  debuted at number three on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart, being kept off the top spot by Clean Bandit's "Rather Be" and Pharrell Williams's "Happy". It also debuted at number one on the Irish Singles Chart on 27 March 2014. On 30 March, it debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart with about 94,000 copies sold in first week.

They’re getting more and more famous every day and the number of fans is still growing. Although their music is called punk-pop, a lot of it is just categorized as pop. Their fans are looking forward to the day they’ll get more famous than ever.

Shooting affair in Amsterdam

In the evening before yesterday, the 9th of November, four people were injured by a shooting in a cafe on the Kruitberghof in southeast Amsterdam. Around 2:30 pm several shots have been fired in the café, where hundreds of people were present.

According to witnesses, there was no arguing prior to the shooting. The offender began to shoot at once. Although the action seemed to be focused at one person, a total of four people were hit. Two of the victims were slightly injured, others heavier. All the victims were taken to the hospital.

The offender or offenders escaped after the incident out of the cafe. Police doesn't have any description of the offender(s). It is not known which side the perpetrators fled.

A police spokesman did not know yet what the motive behind the shooting was.
