The Guest Lessons

Chemistry

Guest lesson Group B

Today the Norwegian students had an experiment called: what is the PH-grade of a sollution.

First they got explanation about the experiment they were going to do. They learned what an acid and what a base is. They started the experiment with several substances from which they had to determine the PH-grade. There were substances like citric acid, which is obviously an acid, soda solution which is a base and alcohol, which is an neutral solution. When they had done this for all kinds of substances, they had to add red cabbage acid. This substance gave the other substances a beautiful colour.

DNA

The Biology lesson today was about DNA. First there was an introduction from the three teachers. Miss Engels told what the students had to do, miss Van der Werff was helping with the experiment and mr Janssen was observing and checking if everything went correctly.

The goal of the experiment was to extract DNA from a kiwifruit. This was accomplished by following these steps.

At the end we asked Lieven Scheepers some questions about the lesson.

What are your thoughts on the lesson?

- I liked it, the experiment was fun to do.

Was it an easy lesson for someone that has no biology?

- Yes, it wasn't hard to understand and the handout explained exactly what you needed to do.

What did you think about the teachers?

- They were fun teachers and where very helpful.

Do you have the feeling that your exchange student was involved in the lesson?

- Yes I think so, because we were doing an experiment in which we had to do everything ourselves.

Waves

Today the other group had the guest lesson about waves. It was the same lesson as tuesday from Mr. Messelaar.

At the end we asked Lieven Scheepers some questions about the lesson:

What are your thoughts on the lesson?

- I liked it but not as much as the biology lesson. This was because we only had to listen.

Was it an easy lesson for someone that has no biology?

- Yes, it wasn't hard to understand.

What did you think about the teachers?

- He was a kind and fun teacher but he talked the whole lesson.

Do you have the feeling that your exchange student was involved in the lesson?

- Only a little bit, because he was talking the whole lesson. But on the other hand, he did translate certain terms into Norwegian.

Language Course

A part of the Norwegian exchange students had a guest lesson given by Miss Van Duivebode today, the same language course as other Norwegian students got on Monday.

After the class was finished, we asked Frida a couple questions about this class. Frida is staying with Maayke.

She finds Dutch a pretty hard language, mainly because it’s so different from Norwegian. The pronunciation is very hard. When she saw the Dutch words she had to say, she really didn’t know how to pronounce them, so she had to take a look at the blackboard first. On this blackboard was written how to pronounce different parts of words. It did help. Frida finds Dutch words harder to pronounce than English words, because some of the sounds we use are really weird and hard to say for them. She really liked the way this class was given, because it was funny to see and hear the Dutch students trying their best to say the Norwegian words and sentences in the right way, and vice versa. She also was surprised of how well the teacher could speak Norwegian. Overall, it was a pretty good language course!

Philips museum

Today the group had a trip to the Philips museum. When they arrived they got an iPad which they had to use for the tour. So they had to do it with the technology instead of a tour guide. They have seen all kinds of things, like X-ray and MRI devices. Their tour took two hours.

In 1891 Gerard Philips has set up the firm Philips & co with his father Frederik Philips. The company was located in Eindhoven in an empty office building. Competition in the lamp market was already large at that time. Gerard makes a difference by focusing entirely on the mass production of light bulbs. Anton Philips in 1895 is hired to take over the sales themselves. It turns out to be successful. He sold 200,000 bulbs in 1895. Three years later over 1,000,000. In the late 90’s, Philips & Co. is one of the largest producers in the Netherlands and with 1000 employees the largest industrial employer.

GLOW

Paterskerk

This year’s Glow also contains a great light show in- and outside of the “Paters”-Church. On the outside of this church they displayed several different patterns and images, as they played various different sounds and noises at the background. It was very impressing and amusing to see.

There also is a special event in the church itself. The show is called Transcedent Flow made by the German light artists Casa Magica. You have to pay four euros as an entrance. The show consists of three parts. Each part showes a different pattern of light on the walls and the ceiling of the church. It was really cool to see.

Light Earthquake

The KNMI reports that there was a light earthquake tuesday  with a magnitude of 2.0 on the Richter scale in the village Amen (Drenthe), a few kilometers southeast of Assen.

The quake, at a depth of 3 kilometers, is the result of gas drilling in the Eleveld, one of the smallest gas fields of the  ‘Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij’ (NAM).

In the North of Drenthe are often mild tremors caused by gas, according to the NAM. It is not yet clear if there is any damage. If there’s damage, it will be reimbursed, according to the company Tuesday.

The earthquake in Amen was the third this year in the province. In February a quake was  felt in ‘Geelbroek’, also at Assen. In March, there were three light earthquakes nearby the village Annerveenschekanaal. The heaviest in Drenthe came in November last year at Annen, with a magnitude of 2.4.

There wasn’t much damage. But the Commissioner King Jacques Tichelaar form Drenthe said: ''On the occasion of the earthquake, as a result of gas extruction, not only Groningen, but also the inhabitants of Drenthe felt it. ''

Equal Rights

"Gay? There's nothing queer about it!"

The government wants equal rights for homosexual men, women, bisexuals and transgenders. They also want more acceptation and safety for this particular group of people. The government punishes people who disrespect and taunt these people extra hard. They also changed the law so homosexual parents will have a better position in our civilization.

Over 1,4 million raised to fight ebola

Giro555 is a fundraiser to fight Ebola which is held in the Netherlands. Giro555 is opened by the SHO (“Samenwerkende Hulporganisaties” / cooperating relief organizations) on the fifth of November and it’s named “Stop de Ebola-ramp” which means “Stop the Ebola-disaster”.  In the first five days of this fundraiser over 1,4 million euros has been collected. Henri van Eeghen (action president of the SHO): “It’s beautiful to see how the people in the Netherlands are making an effort to try to stop this horrible disease. This is a wonderful start. The Netherlands is showing again that we are very involved and concerned about the misery of people far away.” He’s very happy with the actual results and is hoping it’ll continue to go on like this.

Brabantse worstenbroodjes

Ingredients:

Dough:

250 g flour
6 g salt

70 g butter

10 g caster sugar

13 g fresh yeast

125 ml milk

Filling:

450 g minced meat

1 ‘beschuit’*

0.5 egg

Salt

Freshly ground pepper

Nutmeg powder

Extra:

1 egg

Preparation:

Dough

Make a mound of the flour on the work surface and make a pit in it. Sprinkle the flour with the salt. Heat the milk until it’s lukewarm. Pour the milk in the pit. Add the butter and sugar. Add the yeast and mix it with your fingers through the milk to make a paste. Mix flour to the wet mass until it’s a smooth dough. It is important that the dough is kneaded for at least 5 minutes. Divide the dough in pieces of 90 grams. Make small balls, cover them in plastic foil and let them rest for 10 minutes.

Filling:

Mix the minced meat with the egg and a squeezed ‘beschuit’. Season with pepper, salt and nutmeg powder. Divide the meat into portions of 90 grams. Roll the portions into a sausage.

Worstenbroodjes:

Roll the balls of dough into an oval shape. Whip the egg and spread it over the sides of the dough. Put the sausage in the middle. Fold the short sides of the dough over the sausage, then fold the long sides over each other. Press the seams and put the worstenbroodjes seam side down on the baking tray with baking paper. Let it rise for 45 minutes under a layer of plastic foil.

Preheat the oven to 200 ºC. Cover the worstenbroodjes with the whipped egg and bake for 30 minutes till it has a gold/brown colour.

* a ‘beschuit’ is like a round cracker/toast
